Dear Parents and Carers
We did not get a lot done yesterday at Saint James.
Well we did but... we were slightly distracted by Will Hutchinson who competed in Long Jump at PSSA at the Sydney Olympic Stadium for Polding. We are of course now ALL experts with opinions about Long Jump!
Will jumped 4.74m to make the finals. He then jumped 4.9m to place second and is now off to Nationals in Brisbane mid-November. The sign out the front of the school says " Good Luck Will"
We might leave that up or get the captains to change it Monday to CONGRATULATIONS.
If you check out "the gram" you will see the distances Will jumped as ES1 measured it out. S1 did some measuring to. Did you know our side rooms in each classroom are 4m wide? We have agreed that we could perhaps not jump that far but it is a great thing to know someone who can.
The end of year calendar is filling up. At 3:00pm today the events on the calendar are current and we hope you can join us for some or all of these.
The end of year Mass, Graduation and Assembly have in past years "run together". We are now growing and we do not fit in the hall as we used to. This year we will have 2 events. The Awards Assembly and then Graduation and Mass for our whole school and the St James Spirit Run.
Keep an eye on the newsletter for details of this change.
Mrs OKeefe has sent me a photo of Bonnie. Mum and bub are well. So lovely. I will publish this in next weeks newsletter.
Have a lovely weekend.

Reminder - Socktober (Tuesday 25th October)
On Tuesday 25th October students are encouraged to wear crazy socks to school and bring a gold coin donation for Catholic Mission.
In 2022, students and their families across Australia will raise funds to support families in Ethiopia facing malnutrition and food insecurity.
The Catholic Mission has projects on the ground that will help sustain and enrich the lives of vulnerable children who are in need of our support.
Thank you for your support with this initiative.

Little J's
Today in Little J’s we had a T-riffic time doing all things dinosaur! We used paper shapes to construct dinosaur collages, practised gross motor movements based on how dinos moved around, and used pasta and clay to make fossils! Check out Instagram to see us in action!
Early Stage 1
This week in ES1 we have been exploring the beautiful book Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox. We have an exciting Investigation area based around the story where students can role play the characters and use the props to retell the story. We are now thinking about objects from home that hold special memories. We will use these objects to build our own ‘Memory Box”. Please have these discussions at home and be ready to bring in a box of special objects next week on Monday 24th October. Ideas could be a trophy, soft toy, shells, photo, souvenir from a holiday. We can’t wait to hear all the special memories!
Stage 1
We have started learning about the story of the Good Samaritan. We have been considering what it means to be a good neighbour and who has been a good neighbour to us.
We have been practising our story-telling together in class.
Stage 2
This Term in Religion we are learning about different types of prayer. During this week we have learned about prayers of Petition. These are known as prayers of request. So when we come to God in petition we are asking him for help, to do something for us. We decided to modernise our prayers by ‘Instagramming God’... here are some of our posts!!

Creative Arts
By Sam
In Creative Arts, we are focusing on Drama. Last week we learnt about gaining confidence, and this week we learnt how to stay in character. We also looked at some bloopers of when actors went off character (which was hilarious!) We are learning a lot in Drama through games. One game involved one person miming opening a box and taking something out, then you put it back in the box and pass it to the next person. The next game was called Fortunately, Unfortunately. In this game, one person started by saying “Fortunately” then making a story like, “I got to go to the beach today!” Then the next person in the circle would have to say “Unfortunately” and then make up the next part of the story until everyone had a turn. It was very funny.
Science
By Jack Carolan
In Science, we have been learning about submarines. Some of the topics are that we have been researching are;
- The history of submarines
- How submarines submerge
- How submarines surface
- Fun facts
So far I've learnt that the first submarine was a rowboat covered in leather, and it was built in 1620. Also, the inventor was a Dutch named Cornelis Derbbel. Furthermore, did you know that submarines have ballast tanks that fill up with water which make it heavier, and it can go underwater. Then, when it wants to surface, air pushes the water out and replaces it with air.
Mathematics
By Autumn
In Mathematics this week, we have been learning about ‘Chance’. We got to get a little bit creative and make a game spinner, but there was a twist! There had to be a ‘fair’ chance of landing on a section. Then we had to make 50 spins on the spinner and record each one in our book, from that information we had to figure out if our spinner was actually fair. For example, if I spun my spinner 50 times and 40 of the spins landed on the number 6 then the spinner probably wasn't ‘fair’. We had a lot of fun in Maths this week!
