Dear Parents and Carers

Yesterday we had our first on site "together assembly" at St James for two years. It was lovely to have families engage online and in person. We look forward to continuing in this manner. Our runners are back from Sydney, and as I said at the assembly, nobody got much work done on Tuesday as we cheered our students who ran at Eastern Creek. The online live streams are one of the good things from the school shutdowns. Previous to this we would only hear about the runs and swims in Sydney. (I'm sure the children in Sydney could hear us cheering.)

Teachers are busy preparing end of semester reports. Please remember that you are welcome to make an appointment if you wish to follow up on a report or just want to "check in" with staff. The reports will come out at the end of week 9 and you are welcome to seek appointments in week 10 or early next term.

We have stage 2 and 3 children preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Austin told me it was twenty sleeps away this morning. This means we have 20 days of learning left for the term. Just a reminder 1st July is a Professional Learning Day for the staff and as such the school will be closed.

The ES1 excursion today has been a great hit. When I asked "How was it"? I got a thumbs up from Anthony, so it must have been good! Our goal at St James has always been to ensure field study takes place wherever appropriate in the planning. Engagement beyond school gates is very important to our students sense of belonging and community.

Next week Year 4 students will attend Accendere at the Stella. We thank the management for their support. The teachers (Mrs Imeson and Mrs Howland are excited)

Have a great weekend, see you Tuesday.

Ann

It's a Uniform Joke (but not really)

I overheard the following - "I can't wait for Nobody to enrol at school, we have his whole uniform ready." The joke happened after checking for names on clothes in one of our classrooms.

Could you please make sure that every item of clothing has correct labelling. This helps to reunite items with their owners. I know that all families share this frustration and we reunite that which is labelled.

I have had enquires regarding uniform for winter. I know that this is the time when everyone is fish out the winter wear so here are the basics we need to check.

Stockings under skorts are fine;

Jumpers and school jackets are fine;

tracksuit pants (only navy) are fine;

leggings under skorts are fine.

What are not part of the uniform are:-

hoodies ,

leggings worn on their own,

shoes which are not black (coloured shoes are for sports days)

and jewellery (studs and sleepers are acceptable)

These guidelines can be found in the Parent Handbook you received at enrolment and online

Polding Cross Country

The Polding Cross Country carnival was held at Eastern Creek in Sydney on Tuesday and St James had 4 students representing our school and the Lismore Diocese. It was a great achievement to have this many students qualifying to compete at this level. Well done to Iyla Towner, Jake Seivers, Willow Seivers and Heidi Van Leest. All ran exceptionally well on the day in the freezing conditions! A special congratulations to Jake, who managed to finish 4th in the 9 years boys race. This result has qualified him to compete at the NSW PSSA Cross Country carnival to be held at the same venue at the start of next term, Friday 22nd July. Great effort Jake!

Results:

9yrs Boys 2km - Jake Seivers, 4th. 8:01.

9yrs Girls 2km - Iyla Towner, 17th. 9:21

11yrs Girls 3km - Willow Seivers, 31st. 15:21

12yrs Girls 3km - Heidi Van Leest, 25th. 14:06

Athletics

Our school Athletics carnival will be held in a fortnight's time on Friday 24th June. The field events will take place at school over the next couple of weeks. Classroom teachers will let the children know when the events are happening for their age group.

Zone Athletics carnival will be held the first week back next term, on Wednesday 20th July in Coffs Harbour.

ES1

Today was our EXCURSION DAY! ES1 caught a bus to the Yamba Museum. We were able to explore the Yaegl garden, learn about the history of the Yamba lighthouse and the creation of the Turners Beach Breakwall. We also had some hands-on experiences, exploring how schools and telephones have changed over time! We met some parents for lunch at the Lions park and had time to play on the equipment. Lastly, we walked to the St James Church. We were given a tour of the church and we were able to identify the parts of the Catholic Church that we have been learning about in class! What a wonderful day we had!

Stage 1

Stage 1 have been busy finding facts about their chosen animal for their information reports. They have had to gather facts from either non-fiction texts or from the internet (using kids national geographic) and then write their facts into sentences.This week students have been editing their information reports ready for publishing! We can’t wait to share the finished products with you next week.

Stage 2

Stage 2 have been working on their debating skills in English at the moment. They have been focussing on formulating a persuasive argument and using powerful language to convince their audience. This week we have been looking at the topic of “Stage 2 students should have their own phone”. Below are some of the convincing arguments they have been presenting.

Dean - I strongly believe that Stage 2 students should have a phone because if you were in a bad situation or got lost on a bushwalk you could call your parents and screen shot your location and send it to them.

Ashton - I am here to persuade you that Stage 2 students should have a phone because if you are in trouble, or need help, you would be able to call a guardian to help you.

Austin - I absolutely believe that mobile phones shouldn't be in the hands of Stage 2 students because what if there is an unknown caller that suddenly rings you and you aren't sure if you should answer or not.

Myla - I think that Stage 2 shouldn't have phones because if you were playing a game with someone they could ask you questions about where you live and collect personal information about you.

Hannah - I confidently believe that Stage 2 students shouldn't have phones because nasty people people might pretend to be your friend to get your  number, and then start sending you really mean messages.

Grace - I strongly suggest that Stage 2 students should have phones because if the class goes on an excursion and someone gets separated form the group they will be able to get in contact with the teachers and find where they are.

Sailor - You must agree that Stage 2 students should not have phones because kids are able to access all kinds of different games and it is a fact that children can become addicted to these games, and their phones, which leads to all sorts of problems.

Stage 3

Written by Eamon, Willow B & Tayah!

Sport: As you might have known we have been doing Rugby Union for sport the last couple of weeks. We had our last lesson today. We have learnt a lot of different skills; such as how to pass, how to throw a lineout and another game which is a lot like dodgeball but with a rugby ball. If you want to get involved in Rugby come down to Buccaneers Rugby fields (behind the Bowlo) on a Friday night at around 5:45pm or Wednesday at 5pm or go to their Facebook page for more details.

Maths: In Maths we have just finished our multiplication learning. It was fun but now we are moving on to long division. We also are finishing our 3D shapes learning - we’ve had fun learning how to draw and label!

English: For English this term we are combining English and Geography together to research countries of our choice. And then hopefully later on in the term we will create our own websites. We will be researching the traditions and customs of our chosen country and we are going to go through tons of editing to make it look and sound professional. This will be a great learning experience for every Stage 3 student and it will be great practice for their time in highschool.

NAIDOC: Last Thursday the Aboringinal students at St James travelled to the Maclean showgrounds to celebrate ‘Closing the Gap’. They met famous NRL players from all over Australia, and celebrated their culture with pride!
