Dear Parents and Carers

Thank you for your support of the school initiatives and the learning agenda in Term 1.

Can I thank all parents who have contacted staff to build the learning relationships with interviews. All staff are pleased to meet with parents to collaborate regarding learning and relationships to achieve a positive school experience for all learners.

Term 2 looks to be full of events which support this as a focus in the school and we ask all parents to consider one or more events to attend at this time.

On the parent engagement front...

We are looking to have another "Parent Conversation Evening" chaired by Janita Thompson ( date to be advised). Last year's event was very well received and I will be working with Janita on May 13th as part of the Diocesan Taskforce to finalise the new Parent Engagement Guidelines. More news to come as this is developing.

On this evening we will also have an event for the children. For new families- we had a disco for the children while the conversation was on in 2021.   Someone reminded me of the accidental silent disco last year! We have had the system rebuilt. ( fingers crossed!)

At the end of a big term can I congratulate the children and staff for continuing the learning agenda ins spite of the challenges.

Have a wonderful break and happy Easter

We are an EASTER People. A People of:

  • Light

  • Hope; and

  • Future

Ann

RE News

This week we celebrated Holy Week. Holy Week is a very sacred time of the Catholic Church year, where we commemorate and remember the last week of Jesus' life on earth. These are the days leading up to the great Easter Feast and it signals for the Lenten season to come to an end. The greatest focus of the week is the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the events that led up to it. Students have also been learning about Holy Week in their classes.

We wish all of our families a most holy and blessed Easter season.

See below some photos of our travelling liturgy.

Maths fun with your children

You will need to think like a mathematician to solve the following problems and find multiple solutions. Have a go at these with your children during the holidays and bring in your answers to share with Mrs Dougherty.

You may need to use concrete materials such as blocks, pasta shapes, beans or straws to help solve.

Have Fun.

Yamba Song Videos

Writing a song

The LOP writing challenge in  2021 was to write a song about Yamba . The students listened to the song Old Welcome Feeling by Rob Imeson for inspiration. When children learn how to write songs , they are learning how language works and how to experiment with different rhythmical and rhyming structures. To begin, some students  came up with an idea ( based on Yamba ) . The students  used the app chrome music maker to make  a melody that was simple and memorable.

We will showcase the entrants through the school newsletter. Enjoy our entrants: Gemma Hollington, Mignon Espag, Finley Waghorn and Grace Wilkinson.

Early Stage 1

This week in ES1 we have created our Religion Storytelling boxes. These boxes are filled with resources for students to use when retelling Bible stories. Students are currently practising the story of the Good Shepherd. Ask your child to retell this story for you. ES1 students want to wish our friend Sage Wright all the best on her travels to Western Australia next term!

Stage 1

This week in stage 1 we had fun looking at 2D and 3D objects. Students were able to identify the sides, vertices and faces of their objects. We then took our learning outside and asked the students to find 2D and 3D objects in the ‘real world’. In groups students walked around the school looking for these objects and took photos as evidence. We also had a bit of fun and created 2D shape robots! They look great!

Stage 2

This week we were lucky enough to participate in a very special Travelling Liturgy. Throughout this celebration we journeyed to different destinations set up around our school, which symbolised the events of Holy Week.

We stopped at each station and reflected on the life of Jesus, as well as our own lives. We ended up at the final station, which was a time of celebration as we remembered the joy surrounding the season of Easter. We were reminded about some of the things that Jesus asks of us such as:

  • Looking for the good in all people
  • Looking after all of creation (look after our natural and built environments)
  • Look towards those who came before us and our families and communities as guides for good.
  • Knowing that we can always strive to be the “best we can be”

Finally, we received a special surprise to conclude our liturgy - a chocolate Easter egg!

We wish everyone a Happy Easter with their families!

Stage 2 HPL group have been reading 'The Explorer' by Katherine Rundell as part of their Book Club. 'The Explorer' is about  Fred, Con, Lila, and Max, who are on their way back to England from Manaus when the plane they’re on crashes and the pilot dies upon landing. For days they survive alone, until Fred finds a map that leads them to a ruined city, and to a secret.Today Sailor, Indie, Issy and Lola presented their very detailed character profiles to the rest of the class. We were very impressed with their knowledge and understanding of the novel and the character traits that they presented. Well done!

Woodburn Easter Egg Donations

This week we asked everyone to bring in Easter eggs for families affected by the floods. We started thinking about children in places affected by floods, who may not be looking forward to this Easter and would be busy cleaning up. We talked about some families who may even have to build new houses and the pressure they would be under. So when they wake up this Easter we hope these eggs that the students from St James have donated will bring much joy to these families. We wish all of our families a Happy Easter.

 Holy Week Travelling Liturgy

On Tuesday morning our school celebrated Holy Week through a travelling Liturgy. Each class travelled around the school to various stations and engaged in tasks that helped students to reflect on the stories of Holy Week. Stage 3 Mission Representatives assisted with organising this and setting it up for the school. We started at the boat where we talked about the calling of the first disciples, the story of Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. At each station there was a task and some wondering questions that we reflected on. At the final station every student received an Easter egg to celebrate ‘Jesus is Risen’.
