Dear Parents and Carers

It has been a very big week this week!

Monday evening we celebrated Confirmation with the Parish of Saint Mary's in Maclean and it was a lovely evening. Sr Anne from the Music Academy provided the musical accompaniment and we are very grateful for her support.

Tuesday evening the Community Conversation #10 looking at supporting students and their mental health was very well supported. So lucky to have Rob Imeson with us to begin a conversation.

Thursday our School Choir competed successfully in the Lower Clarence Eisteddfod. Both their behaviour and singing was exemplary. Without Annie Commerford we would not be where we are. Not only as our accompanist  but as a partner in the arranging and the choosing our songs.  We talk about a sweet tone before volume and it works!

Today Future Ann has become Present Ann!

As I write this blog I am listening to the song the children wrote with CJ and Rob about the importance of being present at school to build connections in friendships and in learning. On Monday morning the Hall will be transformed into a recording studio to "lay down the tracks" of the song.

All children will be part of a recording. The staff have the children prepared with actions and all have learnt Everyday's a Journey. Will be a big day! but it will be fun!

As I am singing, Mrs Hancock has the children out competing in the Shotput in preparation for our Carnival next Friday.

Busy places schools!

Can't wait for the day! Such a fun time.

Cheers

Ann

SACRAMENTS

Congratulations to Our Confirmation Candidates!

Last Monday evening, our community had the joyous occasion of witnessing several of our students receive the sacrament of Confirmation. The ceremony was beautiful and it was wonderful to hear the words of wisdom from Bishop Greg Homeming again at St Mary's Church in Maclean.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our newly confirmed students: Sienna, Maeve, Mila, Ivie, Jack J, Cruz, Lola B, Declan, Dolly, Finn G, Rocco, Cleo, Jackson C, and Molly.

May the Holy Spirit guide and inspire you as you continue your faith journey. We are incredibly proud of you and wish you all the best in your spiritual growth.

Staff Development Day - Friday 5th July

On the last day of the term, our dedicated staff will be working with facilitator Marty Scroop to further develop our Mission goal of refining our school values. This important professional development session will focus on aligning our values with the foundational work we have started on St. James the Apostle and our identity as the community of St James School, Yamba.

We are also incorporating valuable insights from our recent Community Conversation event, where we captured parent voices. These perspectives, along with input from our students, will be integral in shaping and building our school values.

This collaborative effort reflects our ongoing commitment to nurturing a supportive and faith-filled environment for our students. We look forward to sharing the outcomes of this session with you.

Renee Howland

Assistant Principal, Mission

Mini Vinnies- 2024 Annual Winter Appeal

Mini Vinnies- 2024 Annual Winter Appeal

As part of our Annual Mini Vinnies Winter Appeal we are collecting any warm blankets and clothing from our families.  A box is located in the front office for anyone who is able to donate. This Winter Appeal will provide emergency relief to people at risk of and experiencing homelessness, as well as people in our community who are in need of warm supplies this winter.

We thank you for your support and generosity.

Stage 3 News

English

This term Stage 3 has been learning about ‘Argument and Authority’ in texts. We have been learning how an author uses authoritative language to persuade their readers. Our focus has been on the book ‘One Small Island’. This book is a hybrid text about Macquarie Island. A hybrid text is a text that entertains (non-fiction) and informs (fiction). We have discussed the persuasive language used throughout the text along with identifying the supporting evidence- giving the author authority. The message was that it is a special place and we need to protect it!

Students then chose a special place of their own. Some chose the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru and The Daintree Rainforest just to name a few, to create their own hybrid text. They had to research their chosen place. They had to learn about its location, the history of human impact, geography and conservation efforts. Once they had all of their facts together, they created a narrative (fiction) story about their special place. Students worked extremely hard on their stories and these were published using google slides or canva slides.

Science

In Science we have been learning about Natural Disasters and the impact they have on communities and towns. Early Warning Systems are in place for some Natural Disasters but Stage 3 are designing their own ‘Early Warning System’ for their Natural Disaster. These systems need to alert communities that the disaster is about to take place and warn people to evacuate. Students are using their critical thinking and design skills to build a prototype of the system. We hope to share this with you in the coming weeks.
