Dear Parents and Carers
It has been another exciting week of learning at St James.
I had the occasion to celebrate the life of a friend on Monday who had given her adult life to Catholic Education. 40 years of believing in the staff she worked with, believing in the communities she lived in, seeing the goodness in every student she interacted with, seeking the potential of all staff whom she mentored and joy in all the learning she was able to support, in whatever program she was involved in.
This is how I see the staff at Saint James. Believing in the children and knowing that they are trusted and supported by the families of Saint James.
Happy Teachers Day to all staff at Saint James. You are here not because of your skills (although you are skillful) but because those skills are used to build joyful, safe learning environments for the children in our care.
Year 5 are just getting off the bus from Grafton. Accompanied by Mrs Hancock and Ms Mooney, Mrs Howland facilitated EXURO. This looked to be a great day with students from all the Catholic schools in the valley. We are pleased to be offered these opportunities and can only thank McAuley for their support for these days.
Today I found out something new.
I was invited to chat to some of the Stage 3 children who were involved in an algebraic challenge in Mathematics. They have been working on developing a "numbers of any magnitude" formula in patterns and algebra and were excited to show me the proofs, patterns and solutions from their work. The new part? Year 6 kids like a principal's sticker just as much as the Kindergarten children. I think I am getting soft! When they asked for 2 each I said "Why not!" ( the discussion is the focus of the photos below).
Have a lovely weekend
See you next week.

Even though we were stuck inside today, we are loving the rain! We embraced staying in by reading funny books, dancing, stamping our names in playdough, and creating rain artwork! Check out all the fun over at Instagram - @stjamesprimaryschoolyamba
Stage 2 News
Writing
This term in Stage 2, we have been learning about poetry. In week 1 we wrote our own ‘I am’ poems. We enjoyed having a bit of fun and writing about ourselves. In week 2 we started learning about Haiku poems. We chose to stick to the traditional theme of a Haiku and we wrote about nature. We then added an oil pastel drawing about our chosen aspect of nature. Enjoy reading some Haiku poetry written by Stage 2 students.
Maths
In Maths we have been looking at 2D Shapes. Students have been identifying different shapes and looking at their properties. We’ve looked at lines of symmetry and how many lines of symmetry different shapes have. We've also looked at tessellating patterns and then the students had a go at creating their own tessellating designs. They used different shapes, and rotated and reflected the shapes in their pattern to ensure there were no gaps or overlaps in their design.
Religion
In Religion we have been talking about people who inspire us. We’ve discussed the qualities these people share and have identified people in our own lives that demonstrate these qualities. Stage 2 then created a portrait of someone who inspires them.
We are now learning about Saints and discovering their inspirational qualities. We have each chosen a Saint we will research to find out more about their life.
