Dear Parent and Carers

It is amazing who you see when you are out and about in YAMBA!

I don't get out much in town. Today I took the opportunity with Mrs Howland ( AP Mission) to go on tour.

We met the children from Stage 1 doing sport on the "Cricket Oval". They  had just finished their visit to Caroona. The original idea for the visit came from students within the stage who had elderly family living at Caroona and on visits wanted to support all residents with a visit and card. Well done Jackson and Billy for advocating for service!

So lovely to see so many parents who were able to take the time to catch up for lunch and a play at Lion's Park afterwards.

We left Lion's Park to visit the Touch Footballers at Angourie Fields. Teams played across all fields in teams of 7 or 8. Their sporting feats included sharing to ensure all kids had a turn, making sure all children were in the game with their passing and enthusiastically showing what good sports they are win, lose or draw.

So lovely to see so many parents who were able to take the time to cheer the footballers on. There looked to be some very tired kids on the field when we left.  A lot of sleeping in may be required tomorrow.

I also ran in to parents of ex-students and it was great to hear how they are going beyond the school gates.

All schools had great teachers on site encouraging the children and can I thank Marty, Rachael, Pam, Louise, Tash, Alanna, Tracey and Wayne .

Down town grabbing lunch we ran into several  past parents and they always are keen to know how the school is travelling.

Such a nice community.

Now the pies are flying out the door.  Can I thank all the families who have made orders and the mums (Jo and Jodie) who helped Tash make sure the pies were delivered.

See you next week.

Have a great weekend.

Ann

OOPS... nearly forgot

On Monday I was very proud to travel to Coffs Harbour to the Clarence Regional Public Speaking Finals. Such an entertaining day, listening to the ideas of the future leaders of our world. As I listened to Poppy, Eamon, Reevan and Fionn I noticed that the children from Yamba are very funny!

Students from other schools were not quiet as entertaining with their speeches but the Yamba children all offered anecdotes which had the crowd "in stitches!".

Congratulations to Reevan who was the winner in the Year 5 competition. All our children can be proud of their work. Well done kids!

RE News

The Bible verse, "Mary went in haste" captures a significant aspect of parenthood: the need to respond swiftly and decisively to the responsibilities and challenges that arise in raising children. Just as Mary started on her journey to visit Elizabeth as soon as she learned of her cousin’s pregnancy, parents often find themselves faced with situations that demand immediate attention and action. This verse reminds parents of the importance of being attentive to their children's needs, even when life gets busy.

Mary's journey in haste also reminds us that as parents we need to trust in a greater plan. As parents navigate the challenges of raising children, they often encounter situations that require them to relinquish control and trust in a higher purpose. Just as Mary's journey was guided by a divine plan, parents can find solace in relinquishing their worries and fears to God. This verse encourages parents to have faith that God will be with them on their parenting journey, even when faced with uncertainty or unexpected twists. Embracing the divine plan can provide parents with hope and perspective, helping them navigate the complexities of parenthood with grace and resilience.

Reading with your children –  holiday or everyday tips

How do I provide a rich reading experience for my child?

Parents and carers often ask us what books they should read to their children.

We recommend you read a wide variety of books to your children, from classic picture books to non-fiction texts on topics that interest them.

Reading a wide variety of books to your child will provide rich reading experiences that promote a love of reading. These can be books from the class book boxes, the school library or home. The majority of these books contain complicated alphabet code knowledge, much of which has not yet been explicitly taught in Reception/Kindy or at the start of Year 1.

We encourage you to read these books with your child, rather than getting them to read them.

In doing so, you will;

  • model what fluent reading ‘sounds’ like
  • model appropriate expression and phrasing (e.g. slight pauses at commas and full pauses at full stops)

We also suggest that you:

  • talk about the book and encourage your child to retell the main parts of the story to you
  • talk about the characters, plots and settings of stories and link these to the illustrations provided
  • discuss what was learnt from informational texts e.g. “What did you find out about spiders?”
  • compare the people and events in the texts with those in your own lives
  • select several words from the text (that your child would know) and ask them to put the word in a sentence - this is a powerful vocabulary building activity

Enjoy the reading time with your child.

Little J's

We had a roarsome day exploring zoo animals! We made a lion head mask, practised gross motor movements mimicking different animals, and read the book ‘Dear Zoo’ and completed a drawing activity! We also had lots of fun role-playing using animal puppets. Check out all of the fun over on Instagram - @stjamesprimaryschoolyamba

ES1 News

We have been super busy these past few weeks in ES1! In Maths we’ve been practising counting forwards and backwards, and saying what number comes before and after. We’ve been loving exploring the Coles and Push/Pull/Forces areas in investigations. And in English, we’ve been studying the wonderful book ‘Wombat Stew’ and learning how to write recipes (procedural texts). This week, our Stage 3 Buddies helped us write our own stew, then we followed the steps to make it!
