Dear Parents and Carers

It was great to see so many families at the book parade this morning. Thank you for taking the time to come and watch. The children were a credit to all the effort made. This is the first year that EVERY student was confident to announce their character on the micro phone and that was a wonderful thing.

Hope to see you at the Father's Day Breakfast next Friday 1st September starting from 7am. The order form has been sent out on the COMPASS app today and we are all ready to cook and chat on Friday.
The new playground equipment is completed and ready for hand over on Tuesday. Can we thank the DLCL for their support in this.

Please be aware that any child accessing the playground will need to have an adult with them and there are parts we are restricting in the initial stages as we learn the boundaries as a school. The kids are very excited.

I am looking forward to Saturday evening and Sunday at Iluka Masses. We have a group of children receiving Holy Communion and it is a lovely completion of their journey into full participation in the Mass through this sacrament.

Congratulations to Levi O'Shea on his effort at the Polding Rugby Union in Sydney this week. We have enjoyed watching him play on the live stream.

Have a great weekend.

Ann

SACRAMENTS

First Holy Communion & Reconciliation

On Wednesday we had a group of 14 students who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation with Father Nicolas. These students have been preparing for this Sacrament all term with their class. These are the final Sacraments of initiation. We wish these students all the best as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of First Communion on Saturday evening. Eucharist is unique among the sacraments as it is at the heart of our faith. For Catholics, the Eucharist, or Mass, is the most powerful way we encounter the real presence of Jesus Christ.

The Sacrament of First Communion will be held in St James Church, Yamba on Saturday 26th August.

The order of Sacraments in the Lismore Diocese is: Baptism, Confirmation (Year 3), Reconciliation (Year 4), First Eucharist (Year 4). All preparation is undertaken at school.

For your child to receive any of these Sacraments they must first be Baptised. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

If you are interested in your child/ren being Baptised, please contact the Maclean Parish Office on 66451188 Mon/ Wed/ Fri 9am-2pm to book an appointment with Father Nicolas.

MARY MACKILLOP PERFORMANCE

We are very excited to host a performance, titled ‘Young Mary’ by Troubie Theatre Company on Monday 28th August in our school hall at 1:45pm. This performance will be about Australia’s Saint, Mary MacKillop, who was a determined, compassionate and steadfast woman committed to eliminating poverty and providing a fair education for all. Her famous quote was always “Never see a need without trying to do something about it”.

Sport News

Rugby Union

Congratulations to Levi O’Shea on his efforts playing for the Polding Rugby Union team at NSW PSSA Championships in Camden this week. Levi’s team played exceptionally well over the 3 days of competition and managed to finish in 3rd place out of the 13 teams competing at the event. We’re sure he enjoyed the experience, and challenge, of playing against some of the best Rugby Union players from across the state. It's a great effort from Levi to reach this level of competition and we look forward to hearing about it on his return to school. Well done.

Touch Football

Stage 2 and 3 students will be starting to work on some Touch Football skills during their class Sport time over the next few weeks, in preparation for the Lower Clarence Primary Schools Touch Carnival in Week 9. The carnival is a fun day for the kids to get a taste of playing Touch with their classmates in a relaxed setting. More details about the carnival will go out on Compass closer to the event.

Little J's

This morning we welcomed our 2023 Little J’s and had a wonderful time getting to know each other as we explored our new space, read stories, drew with chalk and made a craft based on the St James uniform. We also planted sunflower seeds and we can’t wait to watch them grow over the coming weeks. We finished the session sharing icy poles with our parents and siblings - what a treat! Stage 1 News

Mathematics

In Mathematics, Stage One students have been learning about data and how we can gather this information to learn new things and answer questions. This week, Stage One collected data about their favourite foods. Our information was displayed as picture graphs in both our workbooks and digitally. We learnt that most of us LOVE pizza and sushi and that our least favourite food is stir fry!

Science & Technology

In Science and Technology, we continue to explore Sound Energy. Stage One students are designing instruments during Investigations - How can we make high/low and loud/soft sounds by changing the design of our instrument? There have been so many interesting discoveries from small and large percussion creations, to flutes with different sized holes. We are learning that sound is a type of energy made by vibrations. When any object vibrates, it causes movement in the air particles.

Creative & Performing Arts

In Creative Arts, we are working on our Drama skills! We are learning how to use facial expressions and body language to express our emotions. The ‘Pigeon’ texts by Mo Willems have been our inspiration. This week, we created freeze frames from  ‘The Pigeon Wants a Puppy’. Students chose a page from the text to recreate and shared their freeze frames with the class. We had fun trying to guess the part of the story that was being depicted. Check out these great expressions!
